The historic heart of Smit-Bokkum is formed by the smokehouse where for more than 160 years the best local fish has been smoked, of which eel is undoubtedly the best known. No less than 6 generations of the Smit-Bokkum family (Jan, Evert, Jan, Evert, Jan, Evert) have already woven and passed on the secret smoke process. 

Today, the fish are still smoked daily by the 5th and 6th generation Jan Smit and his son Evert. During the high season, the whole family is summoned for cutting, gouging, skinning, digging and filleting the eel.

Smit-Bokkum offers private tours in the smokehouse, in which people are introduced to the world of eel and traditional eel smoking. This can ideally be combined with a lunch or dinner package in our restaurant!

We would like to receive telephone reservations for tours between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm. Arrangements 1-6 jusque 16:00

Two-course lunch and tour

Smokehouse tour followed by a two-course lunch:
• Small soup of homesmoked eels.
• Fish plate with smoked eels, smoked salmon, Dutch shrimps and salted herring, served with bread and butter.

Pavilion Smit-Bokkum has been the culinary card of Volendam for more than 160 years. With the greatest dedication, the 5th and 6th generation Smit-Bokkum is working every day to give you the very best that Volendam has to offer, on a dreamy location on the Ijsselmeer border.

In the Smit-Bokkum facility, the world-famous artisan eel smokehouse is located, where since 1856 local wild eels are smoked using the exact traditional technique.

In the restaurant you will find the original home-smoked delicacies together with a selection of traditional Volendam dishes. A dinner or lunch can be ideally combined with a tour in the eel smokehouse or with a visit to the Palingsound Museum above the smokehouse.

At Smit-Bokkum, local Volendam food becomes an authentic culinary experience, and you can taste and enjoy hospitality as it was once intended

People from Volendam like to pretend to be a sober people: ‘when you’re normal, you’re crazy enough’ is a popular saying behind which they try to hide. But how ‘ordinary’ can you still be when as a small Dutch village you develop your own unique music sound, that has achieved 40 years of international success? Indeed, that is quite crazy.

Most hits from the Dutch top 40 appear not to have been scored by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Abba, Madonna or Michael Jackson, but by a number of ‘normal’ Volendammers! The Palingsoundmuseum in Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum offers a search for 100 years of musical blood in Volendam.

Rob Cerneüs, (1943) is an artist living in Monnickendam, whose bronze sculptures can be found in countless municipalities. A special man with beautiful stories and a unique world view.

Rob began welding together old materials at the age of 14. Nevertheless, he soon encountered limitations with the shape retention of old materials. In the search for his own style, Rob has focused more and more on working with bronze and stone over the years. A number of his works -with mutual warmth and tenderness as recurring elements- are permanently set up in the Smit Bokkum garden.
